Arthur Secunda

Arthur Secunda's symbolic landscape imagery, his sensuous color and the monumentality of his new works represent a hallmark of achievement. While the works reflect an inner harmony with contemporary life and thought, they simultaneously express a classic stability in form and structure. Born in New Jersey in 1927, he attended New York University and the Art Students League, continuing his art studies in Paris with Ossip Zadkine, Andre L'hote, and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Throughout his career, Secunda has combined with his art many interesting jobs which have included those of museum curator, university instructor, art critic, illustrator, and ceramic designer. He now devotes fulltime to his art and presently divides his residence between Los Angeles and Southern France. Secunda's solo exhibitions exceed eighty. They include show at the Musée Reattu in Arles, France, Palm Springs Desert Museum in California, the Contemporary Arts Center in Honolulu, and International Art Fairs at Basel, Paris and New York. Secunda's works are found in many important publics, corporate, and private collections int eh United States, Europe, and Asia. His work is found in museums in Paris, Marseilles, Zurich, Ostende (Belgium), Malmo (Sweden), Taipei, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, and Honolulu. Corporate collections include Bank of America, Atlantic Richfield Company as well as numerous universities and libraries. Secunda is noted for his brilliant collages and graphics, J.M. Roquette, Director of the Arles Museum has said, "Secunda's colalges make use of a very seductive, original, and somewhat mysterious technique in which the actual shredding (of paper) coincides with a very personal philosophy of color." His graphics have been acclaimed in Europe and the United States for their lush color and technical inventiveness.
